My Guruji was a trendsetter

Kala Ramnath

Maestro Kala Ramnath with her ‘Singing Violin’ stands among the world’s finest, most inspirational instrumentalists. She belongs to the Mewati gharana and is a direct disciple of Late Pandit Jasraj. Ramnath was awarded the Sangeet Natak Academy Puraskaar in 2017. She has also received several other awards such as the ‘Rashtriya Kumar Gandharva Samman’, ‘Pandit Jasraj Gaurav Puraskar’ and the ‘Sur Ratna’.

Hailing from a family of classical musicians, I started music at the age of two. I started learning violin from my grandfather, Shri Vidwan Narayana Iyer. I also trained under the tutelage of my aunt, Padmabhushan Dr (Mrs) N Rajam, a stalwart in the Indian classical music scene. However, a sense that I am ‘learning music’ developed in only when I was about seven or eight.

Me receiving an award from Guruji in one of his festivals

Though I was familiar with Pandit ji through his music from childhood, I met Panditjiin person in 1982 while I was in my teens when he presented me in concert with my cousin. In a short span after this concert, I lost my father and Pandit ji took the place of my father in my life. He also started recommending me for small concerts.

In the meanwhile after my father passed away, Zakir Bhai(Ustad Zakir Hussain)suggested that I need to change my style of playing the violin. I sounded a lot like my aunt Dr Rajam, and Zakirbhai rightly pointed out the nobody would listen to me if I continue to play like my aunt. She used to play the Omkarnathji style of the Gwalior Gharana. That thought too kept playing in my mind.

By then, I had listened to his music quite attentively and that had left a deep impression even in my young mind. It was so beautiful and tender! It was so communicative and inspiring that I decided, even at that early stage of my life, that I would do music in that style.

Me on the stage with Guruji

Violin, I think, is the perfect instrument to play gayaki. Guruji’s gayaki had so much emotion to it and everything about his music was so beautiful, every note so magically invoked, I felt it would be good to bring that aspect in my playing. I wanted to learn from him. So, when I came to Mumbai in 1989 I asked Panditji whether he would teach me. It was his greatness that he took me under his wings.

Guruji followed a Gurukul system of training. He never charged us a penny. There was no fixed time for training, and it used to be spread throughout the day. While sitting in the dining table for lunch, or while going in a cab to the station, in the flight – he used to teach us whenever he felt. Sometimes Guruji would even call from overseas and would teach me a new composition he had just composed, asking me to remember it. He used to call me his computer because I could remember his compositions well. And I would call him father supercomputer, as he was a vast repository of bandishes. More than one can even think of.

I see a lot of discussions about how Guruji ‘deviated’ from the ‘traditional style’ of singing Khayal. Although his creations such as the Jasrangi style of singing have been well accepted by the lovers of the classical music, there are criticisms, nonetheless, that he blended elements from different gharanas and also ‘lighter variations’ of the classical music, such as Haveli Sangeet, into the traditional form and has ‘compromised’ its purity. I find this so unfortunate!

My Ganda Bandhan Ceremony

First of all, Khayal is all about imagination and it literally means so. No book or document says that Khayal needs to be performed in one particular way. We would not have so many Gharanas if it was so! Let us take Gaansaraswati Kishori Amonkarji’s example. She was a trailblazer in the way she sang Khayal and interpreted raagas. Since it is a Gurumukhi Vidya, everybody learns and interprets it differently. Earlier Gharanas had their way of expression and that has evolved over time. So, to say that Guruji made a compromise by applying his well thought of interpretations does not make any sense. Previously Raga Kedar used to be sung without Teevra Ma, but now everybody sings Kedar with Teevra Ma. Music is evolving, and that is precisely the reason our music is alive today. Guruji was a trendsetter in what he did!

Secondly, it is simply a travesty of the facts to say that Haveli Sangeet is light classical. That is purely classical. During Aurangzeb’s time, deities were taken inside houses or Havelis and compositions were written for offering prayers. Those compositions were based on Dhrupad and Khayal. In fact, Guruji should be complimented for bringing this beautiful genre of the Indian classical music to the fore and making it popular. Moreover, through extensive research, Guruji found that many beautiful bandishes have been preserved in their pristine forms in this genre of music. Before him, many bandishes used to be sung with wrong words. Let me give you a few examples. It was Guruji who presented, for the first time, the correct version of bandishes such as DaiyaaKahaan, the Vilambit Khayal bandish in Bilawal, or KawanBatariya. Very few seem to notice this great service done by Guruji to the Indian classical music.

Guruji was very strict when it came to the pronunciation or uchcharan of words in singing. He showed his mastery on how to do justice to the poetry, how to sing each word and how to bring out the true emotion of a bandish. There were many great Pandits and Ustads before him, but a few could achieve that finesse, I have no hesitation to say. Guruji was a trendsetter in these respects.

When he used to sing, it was like he was invoking the Almighty with his every note, every bandish –  whatever be the raga. This is one of the reasons Guruji could connect with the audience so well and touch their hearts. Many who listened to him and seen him performing say that they got a glimpse of the Almighty when they experienced him singing.

Another aspect of his singing was his mastery over the Shruti or microtones. Placement of the same note differs due to Shruti in different ragas. He had a clear vision of that and had introduced me to this wonderful world. Bhairab has Komal Re, so has Shree. But Bhairav’s Komal Re is somewhat higher than Shree’s Komal Re. Guruji was an expert in this domain. Shruti is something which is very scarcely talked about these days, and Guruji was one who kept mesmerizing his audience with his application of Shruti. He taught me all these subtleties.

Masters like Guruji had a strong connection with nature and nature is the almighty. And it also had a connection with the physiology of the individual. His dedication to the art of music, his sincerity and honesty, his poignant expression – are things to learn. These qualities in him made him firm on his commitment. Let me give you a few examples. Once I was in Hyderabad at his festival (Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh) where I was asked to perform. On the day of my performance, I was sick and was running 104-degree temperature. Guruma told Guruji that I was not in the condition to perform. Guruji dismissed Guruma’s plea instantly and said that I would play. He told me, “if you put in the effort, the Lord will carry you through. You tell yourself that I have given a commitment and come what may I am going to fulfil it”. I played there, I got a standing ovation, and it was learning of my life!

Guruji practised this himself with all sincerity. Whether he was sick, he had a cough and cold, he never used to cancel his concert or go back on his commitment. You can imagine what a cough and cold like to a vocalist! That was my Guruji!

Me seeking Guruji’s blessings

Let me share with you yet another instance. There was a concert in Namibia where we were sent by the Government of India sent us for the first time. I was there with him. Unfortunately, there were a lot of problems in the presentation by the organizers of the concert and in the end, we got only 10 to 15 minutes for our performance. Panditji was not happy. He finished his short performance and told the audience – “I am going to my room. Anybody interested can come there and listen to me”. He asked me to take my violin and Vijay Ghateji to take his tabla, and did a two-hour-long concert there, in his hotel room, for a packed audience. I am not aware of a similar incident with any other doyen of classical music. This shows his dedication and sincerity. He felt happy after that concert.

Guruji had a tremendous amount of self-control. He would never touch oily food, never touch sweets or anything that is not good for his voice. He taught us discipline. These are the things you need if you want to be a good musician. We have seen his humility, too, and marvelled at that. A celebrity of his stature remembered even someone who he had met for a very brief period and treat people with respect.

With his demise, it feels like I have lost my father again. I will, throughout my life, cherish the moments I have spent with him. Treasure the things I have learnt from him. Pass on to the next generation whatever I have imbibed from my association with him.
