নিউজক্লিক ওয়েবসাইটের সম্পাদক প্রবীর পুরকায়স্থ এবং সংস্থার মানবসম্পদ বিভাগের প্রধান অমিত চক্রবর্তী গতকাল ভোর থেকে জেরার পর রাতে গ্রেফতার হয়েছেন, নিউজক্লিকের অফিস সিল করে দিয়েছে দিল্লি পুলিস। হবে না-ই বা কেন?সাংবাদিক মানে তো হ্যাঁ হ্যাঁ বলা সং। মোদী-শাহ, আদানি-আম্বানি এবং হিন্দুত্ববাদের বেসরকারি মুখপাত্র। এটাই যেন স্বতঃসিদ্ধ হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে এই দেশে। আর যে বা যাঁরা প্রশ্ন করেন, ‘না’ বলেন, শিরদাঁড়াটা বিক্রি করতে রাজি হন না, ঘৃণার বিরুদ্ধে রুখে দাঁড়ান, তাঁদের জন্য জারি অলিখিত জরুরি অবস্থা। কাশ্মীর থেকে কন্যাকুমারিকা, ২০২২ সালে নিশানা করা হয়েছে ১৯৪ জন সাংবাদিককে। দেশদ্রোহিতা থেকে মানহানি — আইন অপব্যবহারের চূড়ান্ত নিদর্শন দেখেছি আমরা, ইন্ডিয়া তথা ভারতের জনতা। সাংবাদিকদের গতিবিধি মাপতে কখনও মুখোশের আড়াল থেকে পেগ্যাসাস স্পাইওয়্যার ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। কখনও আবার ইডি, সিবিআই আসরে নেমে দিনভর তল্লাশির নামে হয়রান করেছে স্বাধীন সাংবাদিকদের, মোদি-শাহের আনুগত্য অস্বীকার করা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলিকে। এই তালিকাতেই শেষ সংযোজন, নিউজক্লিকের সঙ্গে জড়িত অন্তত ১২ জন স্বাধীন সাংবাদিক/সম্পাদক, সমাজকর্মী, ইতিহাসবিদ, বিজ্ঞানী, রাজনৈতিক কর্মীদের বাড়িতে তল্লাশি। ৩ অক্টোবর (মঙ্গলবার), ২০২৩, মোট ৩৫টি জায়গায় অমিত শাহের দিল্লি পুলিসের অভিযান চলেছে। পরঞ্জয় গুহঠাকুরতা, অভিসার শর্মা, অনিন্দ্য চক্রবর্তী, ভাষা সিং, সঞ্জয় রাজৌরাদের মোবাইল, ল্যাপটপ বাজেয়াপ্ত করা হয়েছে। নিউজক্লিকের অন্যান্য কর্মীদের বাড়িতেও হানা দেওয়া হয়েছে।
কখনও দিল্লি পুলিস, কখনও আবার ইডি, সিবিআইকে ব্যবহার করে স্বাধীন সাংবাদিকদের হেনস্থার উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে সন্দেহের অবকাশ নেই। কারণ এই ঘটনা প্রথম নয়। গুজরাত দাঙ্গা নিয়ে বিবিসির সাম্প্রতিক তথ্যচিত্র সম্প্রচারিত হতেই তাদের দিল্লি, মুম্বই অফিসে আয়কর হানা কেউ ভোলেনি। কেউ ভোলেনি দুর্ভেদ্য মণিপুরে ঢুকতেই সাংবাদিকদের বিরুদ্ধে এফআইআর-এর ঘটনা। অতীতে বেশ কয়েকবার নানা ছুতোয় নিউজক্লিকের অফিসে ইডি হানা এবং সম্পাদককে ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা জেরার ঘটনা ঘটেছে। মজার কথা, দেশপ্রেমিক সরকার এবার হাতিয়ার করেছে মার্কিনি কাগজ নিউইয়র্ক টাইমসের একটি প্রতিবেদনকে। সেখানে তেমন কোনো প্রমাণ ছাড়াই দাবি করা হয়েছিল নিউজক্লিক টাকা পেয়েছে চীনের হয়ে প্রোপাগান্ডা করার জন্যে। অর্থাৎ অপছন্দের সংবাদমাধ্যমকে আক্রমণ করতে বিদেশি সংবাদমাধ্যমের প্রতিবেদনকে বেদবাক্য বলে মেনে নিতে সরকারের আপত্তি নেই, যদিও সেখানে সমালোচনা করা হলে বলা হয় ভারতকে আক্রমণ করছে পশ্চিমী মিডিয়া।
ইতিমধ্যেই এই আক্রমণের নিন্দায় সরব হয়েছে আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদমাধ্যমগুলি। উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছে প্রেস ক্লাব অফ ইন্ডিয়া। কিন্তু গোদি মিডিয়া স্পিকটি নট। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তাদের দাসানুদাস বাংলার টিভি, ডিজিটাল মিডিয়ায় এ বিষয়টি গুরুত্ব দিয়ে তুলে ধরা হয়নি। মানুষের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করা হয়নি। হবে, এমন মনে করারও কারণ দেখি না। কারণ আমরা জানি, এই কুচক্রের কারণেই ১৮০টি দেশের মধ্যে প্রেস ফ্রিডম ইনডেক্স অনুযায়ী ভারতের স্থান ১৬১-তে।
এই জায়গায় দাঁড়িয়ে, স্বাধীন সাংবাদিকদের উপর এই নির্লজ্জ আক্রমণকে আমরা ধিক্কার জানাই। আমরা এই দমনপীড়নের বিরুদ্ধে বারবার লিখতে, বলতে, জনমত গড়ে তুলতে অঙ্গীকারবদ্ধ। কারণ সাংবাদিকের সেটাই ধর্ম বলে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি। আমরা জানি, চুপ করে থাকা মানে মেনে নেওয়া। আমরা চাই, এই মুহূর্তে এই নৈরাজ্যের বিরুদ্ধে নাগরিক প্রতিরোধ গড়ে উঠুক। কোনও রাজনৈতিক দল নয়, সাধারণ মানুষের কাছেই আমাদের আবেদন, যে ইডির সাফল্যের হার ০.০৪%, যে সিবিআই দুর্নীতি মামলায় ৩% সাফল্য পেয়েছে, যে দিল্লি পুলিস তিন বছর আগে রাজধানীর বুকে ৭২ ঘন্টা হিংসার মধ্যে ঠুঁটো জগন্নাথ হয়ে বসে ছিল, তাদের বিন্দুমাত্র বিশ্বাস করার আগে দুবার ভাবুন। ভাবুন কীভাবে এই সংস্থাগুলি শাসকের অঙ্গুলিহেলনে নাচছে, হেনস্থা করছে আমাদেরই সহনাগরিকদের। আর দিনভর আপনার ফোকাস অন্য দিকে ঘুরিয়ে রাখছে গোদি মিডিয়া। এই অন্যায় রুখতে প্রতিবাদ-প্রতিরোধ ছাড়া কোনও দ্বিতীয় পথ খোলা নেই। অনুরোধ, আমাদের এই প্রতিবাদে আপনিও শামিল হোন, পক্ষ নিন।

Joint statement of Bengal’s alternative media organisations on the reign of terror unleashed by the state on the country’s journalists
Prabir Purakayastha, the editor of Newsclick website, and its HR head Amit Chakraborty were arrested last night after being interrogated since morning. The office of the organisation was also sealed by Delhi Police. Alarming as it is, the incident is not unexpected. Because sycophancy has become synonymous with journalism in India in the last few years. Journalists ruling the roost are unofficial spokespersons of Modi-Shah, Ambani-Adani and Hindutva politics. The few who still ask questions, say ‘no’ to certain proposals, refuse to sell the backbone and stand against hate have been forced to deal with undeclared emergency. In 2022 alone, 194 journalists have been arrested throughout India. We, the people of India, that is Bharat, have witnessed sheer abuse of the law. If one day Pegasus spyware has been used to snoop on journalists, government agencies like ED and CBI have raided and harassed independent journalists on another day. What was done to Newsclick on 3 October (Tuesday), 2023, is the latest in a long chain of such events. Delhi Police, run by the home ministry, has raided 35 places. They interrogated and seized laptops, mobiles etc of journalists Paranjoy Guhathakurta, Abhisar Sharma, Bhasha Singh, Sanjay Rajoura and others. Homes of many other Newsclick employees were also raided and devices taken away.
There is no scope for doubt as to why independent journalists, writers, social workers and politicians are regularly hounded by Delhi Police or central government agencies. Nobody has forgotten that the Delhi and Mumbai offices of British Broadcasting Corporation were raided after BBC released a documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots. Registration of FIRs against journalists who visited Manipur recently, is also fresh in memory. Even Newsclick has been raided in recent past and the editor interrogated for hours, but nothing has come out of those investigations. The funny thing this time round is that the nationalist government has made a New York Times report the starting point of its enquiry. That report, without concrete proof, claimed that Newsclick has been paid to do pro-China propaganda. It means the government has no qualms in blindly believing a foreign publication’s report if it helps in attacking a media organisation it does not like. However, when the same foreign media criticises some of its steps, the government would call it propaganda or conspiracy against India.
The international media is already criticised this attack. Press Club of India has also expressed apprehension but godi media is silent. Television channels and corporate digital media of Bengal, their ally, has mostly chosen to ignore the attack on Newsclick and journalists associated with it. We know that it is unlikely they will ever do it. This is why India currently ranks 161st among 180 countries on the World Press Freedom Index.
Therefore, as independent media organisations of Bengal, we condemn this shameless attack on independent journalism. We are duty-bound to write, talk and form public opinion against this reign of terror. We believe this is what a dedicated journalist should do. Staying silent today means accepting and supporting what is being done. We want people of India to resist this attack. We appeal to the people, not any political party, not to blindly believe the Enforcement Directorate whose percentage of success is 0.04% and whose work has been criticised by the Supreme Court. Please don’t believe everything the Central Bureau of Investigation says either, because even their success in corruption cases is 3%. Consider and reconsider before believing Delhi Police, whose role in the 2020 Delhi riots has been criticised by an honourable judge. These agencies have not stopped short of flouting laws to harass our fellow citizens, while godi media has shifted your focus elsewhere. Therefore, protest is the only way to resist this attack. We urge you to take sides and join us in this protest.
